Collecting Conversations, Episode 7: The Quest for the Charles Allison Collection
My Grandfather's Clocks: The True Story of a Grandson’s Search for an American Inventor’s Lost Collection
tinyurl.com/yxrxckf8
Greg Gerard Allison has been on a quest to find the timepieces crafted by his grandfather, Charles Allison, in the first half of the 20th century. The clocks had been lost for more than 60 years, until Greg's research led him to recover the collection, a journey that led him from New York to Montana. A recent special exhibit at the National Watch & Clock Museum featured Charles Allison's work, and Greg has documented his search for his grandfather's story in his book, My Grandfather's Clocks.

Nice video! Others recommend using grease on sliding surfaces (pallets, clutch, etc.). What are the advantages or disadvantages to oil versus grease?

This was amazing Ken thankyou for this. I'm now off on a venture to learn how to set the beat on a wall clock I recently acquired. I also discovered that there's a clock repair shop in my town, because I'm a retiree and have lots of "time" on my hands (pun intended) I'm going to see if they have an apprentice/volunteer opportunity rather than me spending thousands of dollars on tools to support a new hobby....Thanks again Bill (not sure why my profile name doesn't appear)

Thank you for this video. It was indeed possible to get absorbed in the process. I too think some commentary would be helpful. It could be a voice-over added in post-production, in fact that might be the best approach. Watching a second time, everything fit together better. I was surprised not to see any flux used in the soldering steps. Was that off-camera? Did I just miss it both times? Is there a reason not to use flux? Another question was why do so much fitting using a hand graver? Very skillful, but without explanation it would seem that mounting the tool in the lathe carriage would ensure a true surface. And, again, thanks to NAWCC for producing this and the other videos I've found. I'm a member and I do appreciate them.

Excellent tutorial which I enjoy viewing even though I have been repairing clocks for over 30 years. Always enjoy seeing and learning from other repairer's their techniques. As a long distance member of the NAWCC for almost 30 years with no chapters in my region to share my interest, this type of medium such as You Tube is ideal for newbies and other members. I hope to see more of these in the future and encourage you to also advertise the benifits of NAWCC membership to new viewers with each You Tube video you publish. So as they say - Like, Subscribe and Join. Best wishes from country South Australia.
